Figure 3: This is an infra-red reflectograph (IRR) of the painting. As carbon absorbs IR light, the carbon black of the robe is shows up very dark in this image, and the losses in the original background are visible as lighter areas (i.e. where the carbon containing paint is missing). It is also possible to see a small amount of original underdrawing in the face of Sutton (©Titmus/Courtesy of the Charterhouse, London)
